On May 19, the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) began asking for comment on LEED 2009, a new version of the sustainability rating system that the organization developed in 2000. This updated version is aimed at delivering against key environmental and human health impacts. In addition, it implements a transparent framework for weighting credits accordingly, based on the best available science. It is the product of thousands of hours of volunteer time and expertise given by representatives from every corner of the building industry.
“LEED 2009 resets the bar for green building leadership because the urgency of our mission has challenged the industry to move faster and reach further than ever before,” said Rick Fedrizzi, president, CEO and founding chairman of the USGBC. “LEED 2009, coupled with an expanded third-party certification program and significant enhancements to LEED Online make up a multi-faceted initiative that we refer to as LEED v3.”
The changes from the existing system include an initiative to integrate Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) into LEED credits, he said.
Detailed information about specific proposed technical changes to the rating system can be accessed at www.usgbc.org/LEED/LEEDDrafts/RatingSystemVersions.aspx?CMSPageID=1458. Further information about the expansion of the certification process and improvements to LEED Online as well as future technical improvements, including the integration of LCA into LEED, will be forthcoming in late summer.
The USGBC will also host a series of webcasts related to the changes during the month of June. Visit www.usgbc.org for more information.
The public comment period will close at 5 p.m. (PDT) on June 22.
