HOSPITAL GREEN ROOF HELPS KEEP SEWAGE OUT OF RIVERS

A recently unveiled 22,000-square-foot green roof sits atop the Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield hospital in downtown Pittsburgh. The garden, inaccessible to the public but viewable from nearby buildings, will cut the hospital's energy usage by an estimated 12 percent and divert most of the 37 inches of average annual rainfall away from the local storm water system.
